On the Road Again

 Lucky Cat
Back to Full Blog

I'm still in Eureka, but now with hopes that tomorrow morning the case will settle and I will return to sunny Southern Humboldt.

In the meanwhile I've been eating to keep body and soul together. The Hue restaurant is about 1 block from the Townhouse Motel where I stay, but I always thought of it as a lunch spot until last night. We were heading for the Mexican restaurant on 5th (Rita's?) but Hue was open and we went in. Delicious SE Asian food, just like at lunch. I forwent the Thai tea since it was evening and had wine. Wrong choice, so I got a Sapharo beer instead. Just right.

I've always been a cat person, and have a personal superstititon that seeing a cat when I'm away from home is lucky. This afternoon as I returned home from getting a beard trim at the City Barbershop and walking for some exercise, I spotted this one sleeping sitting up in the window, absorbing the heat from the occasional sun I would say. Talk about luck, when I got back people had several new theories about the case, and one caller informed me that it was going to settle. We'll see, but since I've seen my lucky cat, it's bound to happen. Note: It did settle the next morning after a number of twists and turns.

Once, back in the '60s, when I was a hippie flower child, I had a shirt with a pattern that looked remarkably similar to these flowers which I spotted around 3rd & I. I believe I was roadie for the Blues Project and living in New York when the fashion storm overcame me.

Hope the trial went well. Curious to know the results.

On the 3rd day we had started jury selection by excusing 38 or so out of the first 70 or so called, because being on a jury for 3-4 weeks would create hardships for them. We had been granted a motion to break the charges in half and have two trials instead of one, which would have extended the time for me by about 1 week, but shortened it for any jury we picked for what was now the first trial, by about 1 week, and were waiting to hear the judge's rulings on a series of motions to exclude certain evidence (both the DA and I had certain evidence we wanted excluded, although it was not the same evidence for both of us) when suddenly the case settled. An offer was made by the DA which was acceptable to my client, he pled guilty to the counts in the offer, the others were dismissed, and the trial was over. (both of them) It was all relatively quick, once it started happening. I have to say it was the climax of a 24 hour period full of surprises, and unexpected events. I alternately thought we would settle, and then that we would not, and it wasn't until the very last moment that I knew that we would. I've only had a handfull of cases go to trial in the almost 10 years that I've been a lawyer, but I've never had one settle after it got this far along.

Congratulations on the settlement.

I have pictures of me in shirts with patterns similar to the one in your photo and others of me in paisley shirts with stripped bell bottom pants.

These photos are kept safely hidden away and under lock and key!
