I was in Crescent City earlier this week for a Preliminary Hearing. Didn’t get all the charges dismissed, so I’m back again Friday for a new arraignment. It is really hot in Alderpoint – 105 two days running – and so my sweetie came with me. Like all hill-dwellers going to town means lots of errands for us. We got her phone number switched over to my old phone, which was newer than her phone, which we recycled. And she got Costco to replace her broken Olympus camera with a Sony, which is better, and, by now, cheaper. So we had money to burn.
We dined in Crescent City. But where to go? On-line guides were no help at all. A bare listing of restaurants with no reviews or a couple of outdated reviews. What to do? We did the simple thing. We asked at the motel desk. We stay at the Anchor Inn, which is along the beach south of the main part of town. South of the motel is the Beachcomber Restaurant. Voted "best on the coast" they say on a banner. The motel clerk said the Beachcomber had been featured in Sunset magazine. So we drove the .6 miles south and pulled in at the unimpressive building.

The view from inside is one that would make most ocean view restaurants triple their prices, if they could just duplicate it. The place is practically in the sea. It’s about 6 feet above the beach (no pix, alas, too hungry). Their specialty is Parmesan halibut, which my sweetie said was really good. So was the steak, and the bottle of cabernet. The waitress looked to me to be 16 but she served the wine, so presumably my guess is the result of my aging, not her youth. The Beachcomber joins the Thai House on my list of must visit restaurants when in Crescent City.

Speaking of the Thai House, after dinner we visited them to see about getting a couple of their famous Vietnamese steamed BBQ pork buns for my sweetheart to have for breakfast. It takes about 10 minutes to get them steamed, so I ordered a banana flambé to pass the time. They bring a special tray out by your table and the flames are very impressive. At $3.75 its the cheapest major culinary thrill I know of.
The local newspaper headlines shout that Brookings was 108 degrees yesterday. It's very pleasant here in Crescent city, and people are enjoying the beach and ocean front park. Here are a couple of kids I photographed mid-week. We saw some surfers today but the waves really were not high enough to do any real surfing.

On the way thru the redwoods as you approach town from the south, it’s tiger lily season. There are hundreds of them along the highway, but it is difficult to find a place to pull over to take a look. I did Tuesday and got this shot.

Postscript: We left Crescent City midday, I made an appearance in Eureka, met with a client in Redway, and about 5:30 as I prepared to input a few notes before going to Cecil's for a glass of wine and a small plate of something good, realized I had left my computer at the Anchor Inn in Crescent City. So we hopped back into the car and drove to Crescent City, stopping at Whole Foods (?) in Eureka for a $20 dinner for two that consisteed of olives, cheese, bread, and meatload with bacon wrapped around it. We ate on the move, got the computer about 9 pm. and turned around. On the way home my sweetheart drove and I assembled the music for my Saturday morning KMUD show. By the time we arrived home at midnight the show was ready to burn to disc, and I was burned out And so to bed.
