The road from Arcata to Redding was beautiful, in an eirie sort of way. Wish I had felt I had time to take some photos (wish I could figure out how to post some here for you) but I sailed into the court in Redding about 2 minutes ahead of the hearing time. That's time enough, but not much room for roadside photo sessions. No ice on 299. Can't say the same for Route 36 & the Van Duzen road which I took on the way home. I hit ice late in the afternoon when it had been in the 50s. Glad I went via Arcata in the early morning.
I got to come home from Redding via the Platina road, which goes past Igo and right through Ono. There's a story about those two town names which Mary Alice's father told us. It sounded like it came right out of the Reader's Digest, so I'll say no more and see if anyone else knows the tale and would like to post it as a comment.
I didn't like that road when I took it from Rt 36, but taking it to Rt 36 it was a very pleasant drive. Not very fast, however. it gradually climbs through the foothills following a trail laid down before modern road standards came into use. Like 36 near Red Bluff, the Platina road will change directions just over the crest of a hill, and anywhere it can go up over a little 10' rise, it certainly will. Lots of pretty scenery, too.
